On a dark and stormy winter's night in a miserable, dank room, lit only by a few candles, Oliver is born into a life of poverty and misfortune. Following the death of his unmarried mother shortly after his birth, Oliver's closest family are the workhouse board and their plans for his future don't stretch far beyond starving him to death with pitiful rations of gruel. However, after a courageous rebellion when he asks for more food, Oliver is cast out and forced to make his own way in the world. On arriving in London, he meets the Artful Dodger and is drawn into the dark and murky underworld of Fagin and his gang.
